The origins of Mackay Communications date back to 1884, when John Mackay founded the Commercial Cable Company, operating a telegraph network and laying transatlantic cables that connected North America to Europe—passing through Ireland and beyond—throughout the 1910s and 1920s. In 1925, the company expanded its activities into the radio communications sector and evolved into a large multinational corporation, later being acquired by ITT in 1940.

Mackay was spun off in 1987 and became Mackay Communications, Inc.®, a privately held company headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina (USA). The company has its own sales and service facilities in 18 US ports, eight Canadian ports, Panama, Chile (2), Peru, Brazil (4), as well as strategic locations in Europe (15), the Middle East (4), South Africa (4), and Namibia, Australia (West) and Asia/India (14). Mackay's *Marine World Service* group extends its global service coordination network, with more than 90 agencies worldwide.
