• Shipyard in Guanabara Bay has a license to perform services, but still needs to resolve the situation of unfinished vessels that are on its premises
The dismantling of vessels is part of the strategy to resume activities at Estaleiro Ilha SA (Eisa), in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The goal is to resolve the impasse of ships that faced litigation and were not completed in the last decade, occupying Eisa facilities to this day. The shipyard expects that the sale of material, equipment and scrap will help pay commitments from the judicial recovery of the asset. However, there are studies to assess the feasibility of completing some of these vessels.
Designed and dedicated to shipbuilding, Eisa has to resolve these impasses of vessels that have not been completed and are in its facilities. Among them are two ships from the former Promef (Irmã Dulce and Zélia Gattai), a ship ordered by the Venezuelan state-owned company PDVSA and another that was ordered by Log-In at the time, but which no longer belongs to the cabotage company.
"Transpetro is currently willing to prepare a budget to try to recover these two ships [Promef]. It is an attempt. If nothing comes of it, these ships will be cut, like the [old] Log-In ship that has already started to be cut," said Mauá Shipyard CEO Miro Arantes to Portos e Navios.
The executive highlighted that Eisa is currently the only shipyard in Guanabara Bay with an environmental license for dismantling. He noted that, before being hired to perform this service, it needs to conclude the status of the ships that are on its premises.
