Based on new construction projects, the union projects an increase in demand for professionals in different areas, such as welders, boilermakers, plumbers, grinders and electricians

The National Union of the Shipbuilding and Offshore Repair Industry predicts that, among the professional categories, the demand for new constructions will mainly require welders, boilermakers, plumbers, grinders, electricians, machine operators, painters, jet operators, mechanics and electrical installation assemblers. Sinaval also predicts a recovery in the number of jobs in shipyards, which reached 15 thousand and currently stands at 32 thousand jobs.

The union estimates losses of around R$32 billion, which Brazil failed to generate due to the demobilization of shipbuilding, which employed more than 80 thousand workers at the end of 2014. For Sinaval, it is important to establish a State policy that helps develop national suppliers, valuing the generation of employment, income and sustainability in Brazil.

Sinaval vice-president João Azeredo cited OECD data that highlight that the activity is labor-intensive. He noted that demand is strongly associated with the expansion of trade and the provision of maritime services, the rate of ship replacement and the existing regulations for the naval sector.

Sinaval notes that, over the past two years, the Brazilian government has been trying to implement a long-term naval policy, which has been discussed by working groups of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce (MDIC). “Many mechanisms that began to be discussed in these WGs have been implemented and we are developing a long-term naval industry,” said Azeredo, during an event promoted by the Rio de Janeiro Naval Technology Cluster and the Mauá Shipyard, last week, in Niterói (RJ).
